# What workers should know before their first OPTOVERA Scan

### Purpose

This article explains what workers should expect before their first OPTOVERA Scan and how the Scan fits into the company’s workplace safety process. It is intended for workers, supervisors, safety teams, and anyone who wants a clear explanation of the process.

OPTOVERA is used as part of the company’s workplace safety process. It provides an objective pre-shift measurement to support safety review before safety-sensitive work begins.

What is OPTOVERA?

**OPTOVERA measures pupil response to support your company’s preventive safety process.**

OPTOVERA is an operational-readiness and safety decision-support platform used in safety-sensitive work environments.

One part of the platform is OPTOVERA Scan, which uses a short eye scan to measure how your pupils respond to changing light conditions. This response is called the Pupillary Light Reflex, or PLR.

PLR is involuntary, meaning it happens automatically. It is not something you can consciously control, exaggerate, or suppress.

What does the Scan measure?

**Your pupil response to light is measured under controlled conditions and compared with your established baseline.**

The Scan measures how your pupils respond to a controlled light stimulus.

During the Scan, the Device creates controlled dark conditions, then applies a brief light stimulus and records how your pupils react. Once your individual baseline has been established, future Scans are compared with your own baseline.

The purpose is to provide an objective readiness signal that can support the company’s safety review process before safety-sensitive work begins.

How is my Scan linked to me?

**You choose PIN or optional iris recognition to link the Scan to your record, and can change later.**

Each Scan must be linked to your record so it can be compared with your own baseline. You choose how this is done, directly on the Device, the first time you take the Scan:

- PIN. You set your own six-digit PIN. It cannot be the same digit repeated, such as 111111, or a straight sequence, such as 123456 or 654321. Before each Scan, you select your username and enter your PIN. No one else sets or can see your PIN: not your supervisor, not your company’s administrators, and not SOBEREYE.
- Iris recognition. Before each Scan, you select your username, and the Device uses your iris to confirm that the Scan belongs to your record. This option is never required.

Both choices give you the same measurement and the same kind of result, and your choice does not affect your ability to take part.

With either choice, the Device records a short video of your eyes, because your pupil response is measured from it. If you choose PIN, that video is not used to recognize you, and no iris data is created.

You can change your mind later. Ask through the route your company has set up; once it is enabled, you can choose again on the Device. Changing method does not reset your baseline or delete your measurement history. If you switch from iris recognition to PIN, your iris data is deleted automatically from active systems.

If you forget your PIN, ask an administrator to clear it, then set a new one on the Device at your next Scan. If you remember it, you can change it yourself on the Device.

What should I expect during the Scan?

**Follow voice instructions through the countdown, then open your eyes for a brief video capture.**

The Scan takes about 60 seconds.

First select your username on the Device. If you chose PIN, enter your PIN. Then tap Check and place the Device over your eyes.

The Device will provide voice instructions during the process. You will close your eyes during the countdown, then open your eyes wide and look straight ahead during the short video capture.

At the end of the countdown, the Device activates a brief light stimulus and records a 4-second video of your pupillary response.

How should I position my eyes?

**Keep your eyes fully open, look straight ahead, and avoid blinking during the 4-second capture.**

During the 4-second video capture, keep your eyes fully open, look straight ahead, and avoid blinking.

Blinking, closing your eyes, partially closing your eyes, or moving your eyes quickly from side to side may prevent the Device from capturing a valid measurement. If this happens, the test may need to be repeated.

What does OPTOVERA not do?

**Results support preventive safety without diagnosis, substance detection, or use as disciplinary evidence.**

OPTOVERA does not diagnose medical conditions, detect alcohol or drugs, or identify the cause of a response alteration.

OPTOVERA does not make employment or disciplinary decisions. It does not replace the company’s safety policy, supervisor review, or qualified human decision-making.

OPTOVERA results may be used only for preventive safety. They must not be used to evaluate your productivity or performance, as evidence of misconduct, or to support disciplinary action. Your company may still take temporary protective steps, such as asking you to repeat the measurement or temporarily reassigning safety-sensitive tasks, after review by qualified personnel.

If a result requires review, the company follows its internal safety procedure.

Why does OPTOVERA use a baseline?

**At least 10 accepted measurements build your personal baseline for comparing later Scans.**

OPTOVERA compares your Scan with your own individual baseline once that baseline has been established.

This is important because pupil response can vary from person to person. Comparing your Scan with your own baseline helps the system evaluate changes in your response under standardized conditions.

Building your baseline takes at least 10 accepted measurements, usually over about two weeks of normal shifts. During this period, the Device confirms whether each measurement was accepted, but does not show a result.

What happens if the measurement fails?

**Repeat the test if blinking, eye position, or movement prevents a valid measurement.**

If the Device cannot capture a valid measurement, the test may need to be repeated.

This can happen if your eyes are closed during the video capture, if your eyes are only partially open, if you blink, or if you look away or move your eyes quickly from side to side during the capture.

Repeating the test helps ensure that the measurement is valid and consistent.
