# Association methods and PIN security at a glance

### Purpose

This article summarizes, for IT and security reviewers, how OPTOVERA handles the two association methods.

### Key points

- Every User can choose PIN or optional one-to-one iris recognition; both methods are available in every deployment.
- PIN verifies the username the User selects; it does not identify the User and is not a login to the platform.
- The User sets their own six-digit PIN on the Device. No administrator, supervisor, or SOBEREYE personnel can set, issue, view, or recover it.
- PINs are stored only as per-User salted PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 derivations, held in the iOS Keychain and verified locally on the Device, never in clear text.
- There is no lockout and failed PIN attempts are not logged, because assessments take place at supervised shift start on a shared Device (see Question 32).
- PIN changes and resets reach a Device only when it synchronizes; synchronize Devices after any security-motivated change or reset.
- Where PIN is selected, no Iris Identification Data is created. On a switch from iris recognition to PIN, Iris Identification Data is deleted automatically from active systems.
- Eye Video is captured in both methods; outside the optional iris recognition function it is not processed to identify the User.
- A change of association method, PIN change, or PIN reset does not affect the User’s baseline or measurement history.
