# Understanding the OPTOVERA baseline

## Your baseline provides the personal reference for comparing future pupil responses.

### Purpose

This article explains what the OPTOVERA baseline is, why it is created individually for each User, how baseline acquisition works, and when OPTOVERA can begin producing conclusive Scan results.

This article is intended for Users, supervisors, administrators, and safety teams who need to understand why baseline acquisition is required before OPTOVERA can provide personalized results.

What is the baseline?

The baseline is the User’s individual pupillary reference profile.

OPTOVERA builds this profile from successful measurements of the User’s pupillary response to the same controlled light stimulus. Once the baseline is complete, future Scans are compared with that User’s own baseline to determine whether the pupillary response remains within the expected range or shows a significant alteration.

The baseline is not a general population average. It is specific to each enrolled User.

Why is the baseline individual?

**Each person’s pupil response differs, so comparisons use their own baseline.**

OPTOVERA uses an individual baseline because pupillary response varies from person to person.

Each User has their own normal pupillary response pattern. For this reason, OPTOVERA does not rely only on a generic reference value or compare the User against other Users. Instead, it creates a personalized reference profile and compares future Scans with that User’s own expected response.

This makes the result more specific to the person being tested. A result is based on whether that User’s current response is consistent with their own normal pattern or shows a significant alteration compared with their individual baseline.

How is the baseline created?

**Valid, correctly associated initial measurements establish your reference profile.**

The baseline is created through successful initial measurements.

A successful baseline measurement requires the Device to:

- Associate the Scan with the correct User, through the association method the User chose.
- Capture the valid pupillary response needed to build the individual baseline.

During baseline acquisition, the system is in learning mode. The User does not receive conclusive Scan results. Instead, the Device confirms when a Scan was completed correctly and accepted for baseline acquisition.

Why are 10 successful measurements required?

**Repeated accepted measurements provide a more representative individual reference than one test.**

A complete baseline requires at least 10 successful measurements.

These measurements allow OPTOVERA to build a reliable individual reference profile for the User’s pupillary response. A single measurement is not enough because the baseline must represent the User’s normal response pattern across repeated valid Scans.

The baseline acquisition phase also helps Users become familiar with the test. By the time the baseline is complete, Users have usually performed the Scan several times, learned the correct technique, and become more comfortable completing the test consistently.

Why are only 2 successful baseline tests accepted at the beginning?

**After the first two measurements, eight-hour spacing samples different moments and shifts.**

The first 2 baseline measurements can be taken immediately one after the other. After those first 2 measurements, each additional baseline measurement must be separated by at least 8 hours.

This spacing helps OPTOVERA build a baseline that reflects the User’s normal response across different moments and normal working shifts, rather than relying on repeated measurements taken too close together.

If a baseline measurement is taken too soon, it is not registered and does not count toward baseline completion. When this happens, the Device displays an alert to inform the User.

When do Scan results become available?

**Conclusive Scan results become available only after the baseline is established.**

OPTOVERA can provide conclusive Scan results, Within Baseline Range or Alteration Detected, only after the User’s baseline has been established.

Before the baseline is complete, successful Scans contribute to baseline acquisition. The Device may display a message confirming that the baseline measurement was successful, but this is not a Scan result.

Once the baseline is complete, OPTOVERA compares each future Scan with that User’s own baseline. At that point, the system can indicate whether the pupillary response is within the expected range or shows a significant alteration.

Does the baseline change over time?

**The baseline updates automatically to follow slow physiological changes over time.**

Yes. After the initial baseline is complete, OPTOVERA continues to update the baseline automatically over time to follow slow physiological changes in the User.

No action is required from the User, supervisor, or administrator. This update happens in the background and helps keep the baseline aligned with the User’s normal response over time.

The baseline does not change when the User changes association method, changes their PIN, or has their PIN reset. It is replaced only by a baseline reset, which an authorized administrator performs after investigation.

What helps baseline acquisition succeed?

**Regular accepted measurements, correct technique, suitable light, and required spacing support completion.**

Baseline acquisition depends on repeated successful measurements. Users should follow the correct testing technique every time.

Users should:

- Select their own username and, if they chose PIN, enter their PIN.
- Place the Device correctly over the eyes.
- Keep the eyes closed during the countdown.
- Open the eyes wide when instructed.
- Look straight ahead.
- Avoid blinking during the 4-second video capture.
- Avoid moving the eyes from side to side.
- Complete the Scan calmly and without rushing.

Supervisors can support baseline acquisition by confirming that Users are enrolled, checking that usernames appear in USERS LIST on the Devices, keeping Devices synchronized, and monitoring baseline progress in the dashboard.

### Key reminders

- The baseline is individual to each User.
- The baseline is not a population average.
- At least 10 successful measurements are required.
- The first 2 baseline measurements can be taken immediately one after the other.
- After the first 2 measurements, each additional baseline measurement must be separated by at least 8 hours.
- Measurements taken too soon are not registered and do not count toward baseline completion.
- Conclusive Scan results become available only after the baseline is complete.
- After completion, the baseline continues to update automatically in the background.
- Changing association method or PIN does not affect the baseline.
