# How does a User choose between PIN and iris recognition?

## Every User freely chooses PIN or optional iris recognition on the Device.

Each User chooses directly on the Device, at the first assessment. Both methods are available to every User in every deployment; no configuration exists in which a User can be denied the PIN alternative.

- PIN. The User sets their own six-digit PIN. The Device rejects a PIN made of the same digit repeated, such as 111111, or of sequential digits, ascending or descending, such as 123456 or 654321. No other rule applies. No administrator, supervisor, or SOBEREYE personnel sets, issues, or can view the PIN.
- Optional one-to-one iris recognition. The User selects Use Iris Recognition. Encrypted Iris Identification Data is then created and used only to associate that User’s Scans with their own record, within the Customer’s environment.

Iris recognition is never imposed, and PIN is an equivalent alternative without adverse consequences. Supervisors and administrators must not require iris recognition or present it as mandatory, expected, or preferred, and should not suggest either method. The choice does not affect how the Scan is performed, how the result is interpreted, or how quickly the baseline is built.

Where a User chooses PIN, the iris is not enrolled and no Iris Identification Data is created. In both methods, the Device records a short Eye Video, because the pupillary response is measured from it; outside the optional iris recognition function, that video is not processed to identify the User.
