High Risk Result

Detection of a significant deviation from the worker’s baseline.

When the Optovera app displays a “High Risk” result, it means the worker’s pupillary response shows a significant deviation from their personal baseline. This indicates physiological signs of impairment that could compromise performance in critical tasks.

What does “High Risk” mean?

  • The pupil response does not match the normal values recorded in the worker’s baseline.

  • The system detects alterations in one or more PLR parameters (diameter, amplitude, latency, or speed).

  • It is interpreted as a condition that may impair cognitive and motor functions, increasing the probability of incidents.

Implications for HSE

  • A high-risk result must be seen as an immediate preventive alert.

  • It does not imply a medical diagnosis, but it does require activation of internal safety protocols.

  • The supervisor must manage the situation before the worker undertakes critical tasks.

Best practices observed in clients

  • Wait 5 to 10 minutes before repeating the confirmation test to rule out momentary factors such as:

    • Rushing or time pressure

    • Sleep inertia (just woke up)

    • Temporary agitation or overactivation

  • If the second test still shows high risk, it confirms cognitive impairment, and the worker should not proceed with critical tasks.

  • Experienced clients include this process in their HSE protocols:

    • They treat confirmed high risk as a risk management signal.

    • Use it as an early alert that triggers investigation or preventive actions.

    • Log the event in Optovera and link it to other safety processes for traceability and continuous improvement.

Conclusion

The “High Risk” result reflects a relevant deviation from the worker’s baseline. Confirmation after a short waiting period is essential to rule out temporary anomalies. If repeated, the risk condition is real and must be managed immediately by HSE. This protocol not only protects the worker and the operation but also provides the company with an objective preventive signal and early safety alert.
