High-Risk Result Labels

How to interpret high-risk categories in the test results

When the Optovera test detects an alteration in the pupillary light reflex (PLR), it may display a high-risk result.

To confirm whether that alteration is real and sustained, it’s recommended to repeat the test after a pause of at least 5–10 minutes, while respecting a maximum 30-minute window for the confirmation to be considered valid.

Although the platform shows three general results (baseline, low risk, and high risk), the high-risk case can be broken down into additional categories depending on the outcome of the confirmation test. This segmentation is reflected both in the dashboard and in Optovera reports.

Based on this flow, Optovera uses different labels in the platform and in reports to describe what happened during that high-risk episode. Each category is explained below.

Unverified High Risk

Platform/Report label: ALTO RIESGO NO VERIFICADO

Definition
Used when there is an initial high-risk measurement and the worker does not perform the confirmation test, or performs it after the 30-minute window considered valid.

When it is classified this way

  • There is no second test within 30 minutes after the initial high-risk result, or

  • The confirmation test is taken, but too late (more than 30 minutes later).

How to interpret it

  • It makes it difficult to know whether the initial alteration persisted or resolved, because there is no confirmation within the defined time window.

  • It is useful to evaluate procedural compliance (why confirmation was not applied according to protocol).

Avoided High Risk

Platform/Report label: ALTO RIESGO EVITADO

Definition
An initial high-risk measurement where the worker correctly performs the confirmation test within 30 minutes and the second test result is low risk.

When it is classified this way

  1. There is an initial high-risk result.

  2. The test is repeated after the recommended minimum pause of 5–10 minutes.

  3. Confirmation is performed within the 30-minute window.

  4. The confirmation result is low risk.

How to interpret it

  • The initial alteration is considered momentary or transient.

  • The episode is recorded as a risk that was correctly managed, with no evidence of sustained high risk.

Preliminary High Risk

Platform/Report label: ALTO RIESGO PRELIMINAR

Definition
Used when an initial high-risk result is followed by a confirmation test within 30 minutes that is also high risk. In that case, the first result is re-labeled as Preliminary High Risk.

When it is classified this way

  1. First measurement: high risk.

  2. Second measurement (confirmation within 30 minutes): high risk again.

  3. The first measurement becomes “Preliminary High Risk”.

From this point, the system considers there is a consistent altered state and enables the confirmed high risk category for subsequent measurements in the episode.

How to interpret it

  • Indicates the worker remains in a high-risk state in at least two valid measurements.

  • A strong signal to activate formal risk management according to each site’s HSE protocols.

Confirmed High Risk

Platform/Report label: ALTO RIESGO CONFIRMADO

Definition
A confirmation measurement performed within 30 minutes after a preliminary high-risk result that again shows a high-risk outcome.

Within that 30-minute interval, any additional high-risk measurement (except the preliminary one) is recorded as confirmed high risk.

When it is classified this way

  • A preliminary high-risk result already exists.

  • Any new high-risk measurement within the 30-minute window is labeled as confirmed high risk.

How to interpret it

  • Represents a high-risk state sustained over time, not a one-off event.

  • It carries the greatest weight for operational safety management because it documents that the person remained in high-risk condition across multiple consecutive measurements.

Summary of the high-risk flow

  1. High risk (initial)

    • First measurement outside the baseline profile.

    • Opens a 30-minute window for confirmation.

  2. If there is NO valid confirmation (≤ 30 min)
→ The case remains Unverified High Risk.

  3. If there is confirmation ≤ 30 min and the result is Low Risk
→ The episode is classified as Avoided High Risk.

  4. If there is confirmation ≤ 30 min and the result is High Risk

    • The first high risk becomes Preliminary High Risk.

    • Each additional high risk within those 30 minutes is recorded as Confirmed High Risk

Conclusion

Optovera’s high-risk labels help distinguish between transient alterations, unverified episodes, and sustained high-risk states—always in the context of a confirmation test performed with a minimum 5–10 minute pause and a maximum 30-minute window.

This allows HSE teams to:

  • Evaluate compliance with test and confirmation protocols.

  • Clearly identify critical events (confirmed high risks).

  • Make informed decisions about fitness for critical tasks and corrective actions.
