Lighting conditions for supervisors during OPTOVERA baseline testing
Purpose
This supervisor-facing article explains how to manage lighting conditions during OPTOVERA baseline testing and how to use the Device’s lux measurement.
Baseline lighting rule
Baseline measurements should be captured only in low or normal indoor light below 1,000 lux.
The ambient lux measurement can be read on the Device home screen. Supervisors should check this reading before baseline testing.
If the ambient light is too bright, the Device may warn that the baseline will not be recorded. The worker should be moved to a more appropriate indoor lighting condition and the test should be repeated when conditions are suitable.
Why this matters
PLR is repeatable within an individual when the same light stimulus is presented under the same conditions. However, very bright exposure before testing may require more than 60 seconds for the pupils to re-dilate.
If a baseline test starts before the pupils have returned to the expected starting condition, the baseline may be inconsistent.
This is especially relevant when workers move between different environments, such as:
- Offices
- Loading bays
- Vehicles
- Outdoor areas
- Direct sunlight
- Bright industrial work areas
What supervisors should do
Before baseline testing, supervisors should:
- Check the lux measurement on the Device home screen.
- Confirm that ambient light is below 1,000 lux.
- Avoid collecting baseline measurements immediately after workers have been exposed to very bright light.
- Ask workers to wait until they are calm and comfortable before testing.
- Use a low or normal indoor lighting area when possible.
- Do not rush workers through baseline Scans.
- Repeat the test if the Device indicates that the baseline was not recorded.
- Verify that the worker appears in USERS LIST on the Device before testing.
- Keep the Device synchronized and confirm Pending measurements are cleared.
