How to run an OPTOVERA Scan correctly
Eye movement, incomplete capture, association issues, or unsuitable lighting can invalidate measurements.
Purpose
This article explains how to complete an OPTOVERA Scan correctly and how to avoid the most common causes of failed measurements.
It is intended for Users, supervisors, site administrators, and safety teams.
Before the Scan
Before testing begins, make sure the Device and the User are ready.
Supervisors or authorized personnel should confirm that:
- The Device is charged.
- The Device has been synchronized as needed.
- UPDATE USERS LIST has been used when needed, including after any PIN reset.
- Pending measurements are at zero, or the Device is connected and synchronized.
- The User is enrolled in the OPTOVERA platform.
- The User appears on the Device, by opening the Device menu and checking USERS LIST.
- The User understands the basic test instructions.
The User should be calm and comfortable before starting. The User should not rush the Scan and should not start immediately after coming from a very bright environment.
For baseline measurements, supervisors should also confirm that the ambient light level is below 1,000 lux. The lux measurement can be read on the Device home screen.
If a baseline test is taken in lighting conditions above 1,000 lux, the baseline measurement is discarded and is not registered in the platform.
During the Scan
The User selects their own username on the Device. A User who chose PIN then enters their PIN. The User taps Check and follows the Device instructions.
The User then places the Device over the eyes. The Visor creates a controlled dark environment and the Device starts a 60-second countdown. During this countdown, the User keeps the eyes closed.
At the end of the countdown, the Device instructs the User to open the eyes wide and look straight ahead. The Device then activates a 4-second light stimulus and records a video of the pupillary response.
During this 4-second video capture, the User must:
- Keep the eyes fully open.
- Look straight ahead.
- Avoid blinking.
- Avoid moving the eyes from side to side.
- Keep the Device properly positioned.
- Remain calm and still until the capture is complete.
Correct eye position
Correct eye position means the eyes are fully open and looking straight ahead.
The Device needs a clear view of the pupil to capture a valid measurement. For a User who chose iris recognition, it also needs a clear view of the iris to associate the Scan with the correct enrolled User.
Incorrect technique includes poor eye opening, looking to the sides, closing the eyes during the test, blinking, or excessive eye movement.
If the pupil is not visible, the Device cannot perform the PLR analysis. If the eyes are not looking straight ahead, processing may fail. For a User who chose iris recognition, if too much of the iris is covered, the Device may not recognize the User.
In our experience, once Users learn the correct technique, they quickly become comfortable with the process and are able to complete the test correctly and consistently.
What can cause the measurement to fail?
The measurement may fail if:
- The User blinks during the 4-second capture.
- The User closes the eyes during the capture.
- The eyes are only partially open.
- The User looks to the side.
- The User moves the eyes quickly from side to side.
- The Device is removed or moved before the test is complete.
- For a User who chose iris recognition, the User is not recognized.
- The user list is not current.
- The User does not appear in USERS LIST on the Device.
- A baseline test is attempted in lighting conditions above 1,000 lux.
- The User starts immediately after exposure to very bright light.
- The User is rushed, uncomfortable, or not calm during the test.
If the measurement fails, the test must be repeated.
What happens if the User is not recognized?
Check the user list and repeat with the correct username and eye position.
This applies only to Users who chose iris recognition. If the User does not appear in USERS LIST, synchronize the Device with UPDATE USERS LIST, confirm connectivity if needed, and check USERS LIST again.
If iris recognition fails, the Device displays this message:
RECOGNITION FAILED: You may not have kept your eyes fully open and looking straight ahead or you selected an incorrect Username. Measurement not registered. You need to retake the test.
The measurement is not registered and the User must repeat the test. Check that the User selected their own username, then repeat the test using the correct technique.
If the User is not recognized repeatedly, or if tests are recorded under the wrong username, contact OPTOVERA support at support@sobereye.com.
What happens if the PIN is not accepted?
Retry with the correct username; reset a forgotten PIN through an administrator.
The User should check that they selected their own username and enter the PIN again; there is no limit on attempts. If the User has forgotten the PIN, an administrator clears it, the Device is synchronized, and the User sets a new PIN on the Device at the next assessment. See Question 13.
After the Scan
When the test is complete, the result is displayed on the Device.
The result is recorded locally on the Device. When the Device is connected, results are synchronized with the cloud platform.
If the result requires review, supervisors or qualified personnel should follow the organization’s internal safety procedure.
